LUKAS on Violence Lessons from the World’s Smartest Horse   As Lukas’ trainer, much of my experience has come from many years as a psychiatric nurse on acute-care locked down units.  Take-downs.  Even the name conjures up the octagon fight ring. Only there are no referees here.  Technically speaking, take-downs are only supposed to occur if there is eminent danger to patients or staff...

Who is That Masked Horse? Lukas Reveals His Secret Identity   “How on earth do you get Lukas to wear all those costumes, Karen?” Up until now, only Lukas’ closest friends know how this is done. Foot-long reindeer antlers, bobbing clovers that read “Kiss me, I’m Irish,” a full-size sombrero with a matching chili necklace, a hot water bottle (a big favorite the day after New Year’s Eve),...

No Bling for Lukas! World’s Smartest Horse Declines Sixth Sponsorship

Category : In the Press, Written Words

Lukas (http://www.playingwithlukas.com), the World’s Smartest Horse (according to the World Records Academy) and Guinness World Record Holder (“Most numbers correctly identified by a horse in one minute: 19”), has declined yet another product sponsorship offer. The ex-racer and former rescue has appeared on NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN, HLN, Inside Edition and Time Warner and countless newspapers and magazines to promote second chances for those in need. Lukas and his best friend Karen Murdock decided to forego association with a particular brand or company because, according to Murdock, “In this way, we are able to focus on Lukas’ message.” Instead, sponsors have been encouraged to contribute to rescues of their choice.

“The Million Hit Horse” has captured the word’s heart according to journalists around the globe. Lukas and Murdock freely share their message of hope and happiness; they donate their time and services to show how wonderful and smart animals are for their improved treatment.

Story Time with Lukas

Ex-Racer and Former Rescue Horse Releases Children’s Video

Lukas, the World’s Smartest Horse (according to the World Records Academy) and Guinness World Record Holder, has released his newest video Story Time with Lukas to rave reviews. According to Karen Murdock, Lukas’ owner/trainer, “I wrote Story Time for children, and it’s my favorite so far – we’ve had a tremendous response, especially from adults!” With heart-warming pictures to accompany the touching tale of Lukas’ transformation, it gives the viewer an inside look at Murdock and Lukas’ legendary bond.  Excerpts from Story Time:

“I was born to run very fast and win horse races – my name is Lukas. My great-great-grandfather was a famous champion, and my owners hoped that I could be like him. I tried very hard to do what they wanted, but my legs weren’t strong enough, so I got hurt and couldn’t race anymore. My owners found a new stable for me, but when my legs healed I was even slower than before, so they gave me away to someone else. This owner didn’t want to keep me either, and I went to several other homes which got worse with each move. Finally, I ended up with people who didn’t feed me and I became very skinny and sad.”

“One day, a lady drove by and saw me – she felt so sorry for me she offered to buy me. She was a trainer and wanted me to be a jumper. I tried my best, but the work was very hard and it hurt my sore legs. She put me up for sale too because she didn’t want to keep a horse who couldn’t win ribbons. I was advertised as a kind and sensitive horse – I was going to another new home, but this time it would be different.”

See why the rest is history: over one million web-site visitors from sixty-four countries, television appearances, radio segments, a documentary and book, event invitations, titles, awards and even a Guinness World Record. Lukas and Murdock donate their time and services to show how wonderful and intelligent animals are for their improved treatment.

What Do Lukas, Lucille Ball and the Muppets Have in Common? They’ve All Been Nominated for a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!

Category : In the Press

Lukas, the World’s Smartest Horse (according to the World Records Academy) and Guinness World Record Holder, has been nominated for a star on the renowned Hollywood Walk of Fame! According to Karen Murdock, Lukas’ owner/trainer, Lukas’ category is Performance (apparently there wasn’t one for best smile). Lukas would be the first horse selected and would join dogs Lassie and Rin Tin Tin, if chosen.

Trivia question: But what about Trigger? (see answer below)

Nominee’s Qualifications:

His story has been heard on Pet Talk Radio, Pet Talk Live Radio, Animal Talk Radio, and the Horse Radio Network, among others. Lukas has been recognized as the World’s Smartest Horse by the World Records Academy and is a Guinness World Record Holder for: “Most numbers identified by a horse in one minute: 19.” In addition, Lukas was recently presented with an award certificate for his accomplishments from California State Assemblyman Curt Hagman. And, his web-site has been visited by over one million friends from fifty-seven countries.

Also, Murdock donated Lukas’ training model to H.E.A.L. (Human Equine Alliance for Learning), – an equine therapy practice specializing in trauma victims. Lukas has also been invited to join the ranks of the Wounded Warriors Program, and Murdock has volunteered her techniques at the International Certified Horsemanship Association Conference. Lukas’ spectacular documentary, detailing his journey from a racetrack reject to Internet stardom, is posted on his web-site and his free training videos are highly popular and appeal to a broad audience.

Trivia answer: Although Trigger’s hoof-prints lie alongside Roy Rogers’ in front of Grauman’s Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, the palomino isn’t officially listed as a star recipient.

According to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Nomination for the 2011 Selection Committee:

I, the undersigned, Lukas, do hereby gladly accept the nomination put forth on my behalf for a star on the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame.

If selected, I will participate in person/horse at the star dedication ceremony.

World’s Smartest Horse Gets Cable! Lukas on Time Warner Television

Category : In the Press

Lukas, the World’s Smartest Horse (according to the World Records Academy) and Guinness World Record Holder, was recently featured on Time Warner CNN Headline News (January 21, 22, 23). An interview with Karen Murdock, Lukas’ owner/trainer, traces his past and offers insights into their purpose.

  1. How old is Lukas and how long have you had him? Lukas is seventeen now; I bought him nine years ago.
  2. What is his background and how did you find him? I found Lukas advertised in a sale ad described as an inexperienced project horse. He’d been found starving and neglected in a yard – the woman I bought him from had tried to make him into a jumper but he wasn’t fitting in. His breed is a Thoroughbred and he raced in three races as a two-year-old, hurt his legs and left the track. He changed homes several times over the following six years until his rescue.
  3. What is your background and experience? I’ve been a psychiatric nurse for the last twenty-six years and I’ve also devoted my life to studying ways of training animals in a kind manner for their improved treatment. I use liberty – the horse is loose and free – and no equipment at all to show that animals can be taught without force.
  4. What are your techniques and can they be applied to other species? After thirty-five years of studying every type of training available, I developed a system based on Shaping, a clicker approach and positive reinforcement. In a nutshell, it’s getting small behaviors and putting them together by encouraging cooperation. And yes, I also use these techniques on all of my dogs as well; Wendel, my spaniel, who I’ve trained, is a certified therapy dog. My psychiatric patients, daughter, friends and neighbors, even my husband, and especially myself have benefited from this approach – principles based on trust, caring, appreciation and respect apply to everyone.
  5. We’ve heard that Lukas was just approved for a Guinness World Record – can you tell us about that and when did you notice that he was so smart? Yes, thank you, that was so exciting – our Guinness record was recently approved: “Most numbers correctly identified by a horse in one minute: 19.” Lukas’ intelligence came out gradually and as his eagerness and understanding grew, I just kept expanding the lessons.
  6. What are some things that Lukas can do? Lukas can kiss, smile, yawn, catch, fetch, wave, bow, curtsey, stay and come, sit, go on his pedestal, do lots of fancy footwork and rear. I’ve also taught him to identify letters, numbers and shapes, and discriminate colors, and he understands the concepts of spatial relationships, object permanence, same/different, proportion and absentness.
  7. Why did you start teaching him cognitive tasks? The cognitive tasks resulted from several things: curiosity about how much Lukas was capable of learning and a strong belief that animals would be treated better if people realized how smart they were. Also, from my mental health background, it is a way for people to practice kindness and hopefully be better humans to each other as well.
  8. What are your future plans? We have lots of exciting projects planned for 2011: increased exposure through appearances, interviews, articles and events. We hope to continue to spread Lukas’ message of hope and happiness to more people who also believe that the world can be a better place for all.
